Triumph Tiger 800 XRT

Time for New Tires on your 2018-2019 Triumph Tiger 800 XRT?

I purchased a new 2018 Triumph Tiger XRT in June of 2019. After a year of ownership and 10,000 miles, it was time to purchase new tires. My Tiger came originally equipped with Metzeler Tourance Next tires. I assumed Triumph would equip their new bikes with average tires and there must be a better tire out there. So my search began.

Options

The 2018 and 2019 Triumph Tiger 800 XR line of motorcycles includes the XRT, XRX, XRX Low, and XR. This was Triumphs road focused Adventure Bike designed for light touring. The front tubeless tire is 100/90-19 57V and rear 150/70R17 69V.

Option 1

Replace with a new set of Metzeler Tourance Next tires. These are the recommended tires in Triumpth’s Tire Selector guide. The Tourance Next were designed for mileage and provide traction for a 90/10 riding style (90% asphalt and 10% dirt). From talking with dealers and folks on the message boards, 10,000 miles seems to be average for this tire.

Option 2

Replace with a more enduro focused Metzeler Tourance. This tire was designed for a 85/15 riding style and offers more of a waffle tread. This is a great option if you find yourself riding dirt roads occasionally. It provides the same mileage features as the Next but adds coinfedence while riding a country dirt road. The trade off will be a tire that adds some additional road noise when riding at highway speeds.

Option 3

Replace with a set of Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires. From the discussions I have had, these are a great performance tire and provide great traction for aggressive riding. They are considered 90/10 tires and are most similar to the Metzeler Tourance Next. The main difference is the materials of the tire. The Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires are sticky performance tires. The downside is you will only get 3500 to 5000 miles out of this set of tires. If you find yourself riding mostly day trips on twisty canyon roads and mileage is not a concern, this would be a great choice. Plus they have a really cool scorpion as part of the tread :-).

Conclusion

After spending several hours researching new tires for my 2018 Triumph Tiger 800 XRT, I ended up where I started and purchased a set of the Metzeler Tourance Next tires for my next 10,000 miles of riding.
